Cycling fans are pumped up, but Tour of Missouri is on life support

Tour of Missouri organizers prepare to get this year's international
cycling race rolling, they can't help but cast an eye on an uncertain
future.
The third annual event - which opens today and continues
through Sunday - promises to be the best ever, with many of the sport's
superstars and seven teams from the Tour de France in the 15-team
field. But that still might not be enough to save the race.

120 cyclists from more than 20 countries — many of them coming off a
Tour de France performance — touring the best Missouri has to offer.
The third Tour of Missouri starts Monday in St. Louis and works its way
across the state, ending next Sunday in Kansas City. The seven-day,
612-mile race has emerged as a world-class event.

The strongest field
to line up on American soil since February's Amgen Tour of California
will roll off Monday afternoon in St. Louis on stage 1 of the Tour of
Missouri.
Tour de France stars Levi Leipheimer, Mark Cavendish, Christian
Vande Velde, Thor Hushovd, George Hincapie, Jens Voigt and many others
will be among those shooting for stage wins or the overall in the
seven-day race.

Two years ago, 120 pro cyclists gathered in Kansas City for the opening
stage of the inaugural Tour of Missouri, convinced they were in for a
hot, boring ride across a flat state void of passionate fans. They
joked amongst themselves that they were embarking on the Tour of Misery.
This weekend, 120 pro cyclists will gather here for the start of the
third edition of the seven-day, 600-mile race. Among their ranks are
